DESCRIPTION OF AWARD:

The Alberta Association on Gerontology Provincial Board is pleased to sponsor two awards to be given to graduate students in Alberta who have an interest in any aspect of aging. The award is to assist with costs associated with coursework, research or attendance at a workshop/conference.

VALUE AND DURATION:

Up to two awards of $1000 will be awarded annually. Each award recipient will also receive a free one-year membership in the Alberta Association on Gerontology.

ELIGIBILITY:

The applicant must:

  1. Be registered in a graduate degree program in an accredited post-secondary institution in Alberta
  2. Not be in the last term of their program
  3. Demonstrate an interest in any aspect of aging
  4. Agree to contribute an article for an edition of the AAGMag (e.g., a written summary of their research)

The individual who receives the Edmonton Chapter or the Calgary Chapter Student Award is not eligible to receive a provincially sponsored award in the same year. An individual can receive the provincially sponsored award only once in their degree program.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

A complete application will consist of five parts:

  1. A completed application form.
  2. A two-page cover letter that includes a description of the applicant’s current studies or research, relevant volunteer/work experience, future plans in gerontology (academic, research, practice), and a brief statement of how the award will be used to support the applicant’s interest in gerontology.
  3. A copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae.
  4. A copy of all post-secondary education transcripts (they do not need to be original).
  5. A letter of reference on institutional letterhead from the student’s supervisor. This letter should indicate the student’s name in the header and must be submitted directly by the supervisor to AAG either by email or mail.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The awards will be adjudicated and administered by the Alberta Association on Gerontology Provincial Board.

CRITERIA:

Applications will be assessed on academic merit as illustrated by grades and educational attainment, relevant work/volunteer experience, current studies/research plans, future commitment to the field of gerontology, and an indication of how this award will be used to support the applicant’s interest in gerontology. Preference will be given to full-time students and current AAG members.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

March 31, 2017 (post-marked or email). The award will be presented at the Annual General Meeting in June.
