DESCRIPTION OF AWARD:

The Edmonton Chapter of the Alberta Association on Gerontology (AAG) is pleased to be the sponsor of an award to be given to a graduate student from the Edmonton area who has an interest in any aspect of aging. The award is expected to assist with the costs associated with a students’ coursework, research or attendance at a workshop or conference.

VALUE AND DURATION:

An award of $1000 will be awarded annually. The award recipient will also receive a free one-year membership in the Alberta Association on Gerontology.

ELIGIBILITY:

The applicant must:

  1. Be registered in a graduate degree program in an accredited post secondary institution
  2. Reside in Edmonton or surrounding communities
  3. Not be in the last term of their program
  4. Demonstrate an interest in any aspect of aging
  5. Agree to contribute an article for an edition of the AAGMag (e.g., a written summary of their research)

Individuals are encouraged to apply for the AAG Provincial award as well as the AAG Edmonton Chapter award but more than one award will not be given to the same person in the same year. An individual can receive the Edmonton Chapter award only once in their degree program.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

A complete application will consist of five parts:

    1. A completed application form.
    2. A two-page cover letter that includes a description of the applicant’s current studies or research, relevant volunteer/work experience, future plans in gerontology (academic, research, practice), and a brief statement of how the award will be used to support the applicant’s interest in gerontology.
    3. A copy of the applicant’s curriculum vitae.
    4. A copy of all post-secondary education transcripts (they do not need to be original).
    5. A letter of reference on institutional letterhead from the student’s supervisor. This letter should indicate the student’s name in the header and must be submitted directly by the supervisor to AAG either by e-mail or mail.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The award will be adjudicated by the Alberta Association on Gerontology Provincial Board.

CRITERIA:

Applications will be assessed on academic merit as illustrated by grades and educational attainment, relevant work/volunteer experience, current studies/research plans, future commitment to the field of gerontology, and an indication of how this award will be used to support the applicant’s interest in gerontology. Preference will be given to full-time students and current AAG members.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

March 31, 2017 (post-marked or email). The awards will be presented at the Edmonton Chapter Annual General Meeting in June.
